New Hanover Park police dog needs a name

The Hanover Park Police Department suffered a blow when its first-ever canine officer, Rumble, passed away just a couple weeks after retiring last month.

Knowing the positive impact man's best friend can have on both a drug bust and community relations, the department decided to purchase a 2-year-old German shepherd, which is now gearing up to attend the Canine Training Academy.

Now, the department wants the public to help pick a name.

Now through Thursday, April 29, Hanover Park residents can go to hpil.org and click on the Canine survey link to submit an idea. The winner will be announced on Friday, April 30.

Deputy Police Chief Tom Cortese said the police department is asking students at Hanover Park schools to chime in. They've also posted a survey on hanoverparkillinois.org

Just as Rumble served on the force for 11 years, his handler, Officer Mark Atkinson, will work with the yet-to-be-named pooch.
