Defense: Death of Rolling Meadows man tied to other crimes

Attorneys for Patrick Taylor, charged with the 2006 shooting death of a Rolling Meadows man, want the Chicago Police Department to turn over information they believe is pertinent to their case.

Taylor, of 7500 block of Vernon in Chicago, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Marquis Lovings, 30. If convicted, Taylor could face the death penalty.

Cook County Assistant Public Defenders Jim Mullenix and Kristina Yi subpoenaed reports of cases in which the gun police say Taylor used to kill Lovings figures.

"There is a connection between the weapon used in this case" and other cases, Mullenix said.

Because the police have not complied with the request, Yi asked Cook County Circuit Court Judge John Scotillo to order the department to hand over those reports.

"The police object to the release of reports on open murder investigations," said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Mike Clarke.

Mullenix responded by informing the court that some of the reports the defense seeks involve cases that have concluded, while some are ongoing. The reports they're seeking include murder cases, one of which concluded with a conviction and two which concluded with acquittals, Mullenix said.

Additionally, Yi said that some individuals referenced in the reports have a connection to the gun used in the Lovings' case.

Scotillo granted the defense's request and set the next hearing for May 11.

Taylor's trial is expected to begin later this year.
