Round Lake Beach man gets 8 years for 14-pound pot shipment
A Round Lake Beach man arrested just minutes after he accepted a shipment of close to 14 pounds of marijuana was sentenced to eight years in prison Thursday in Lake County Circuit Court
Adrian Miller, 24, will have a chance to be released in as little as six months if he completes the prison impact incarceration program.
Assistant State's Attorney Matthew Demartini said Nebraska State Police stopped a vehicle for speeding on Jan. 20 and discovered the marijuana inside. The driver of the car told police he was in the process of taking the 13.8-pound shipment to Miller's residence in the 2000 block of Strafford Lane.
Nebraska officials contacted the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group, and agents obtained a search warrant for Miller's house based on the information.
When the shipment arrived from Nebraska, Demartini said, MEG agents were waiting nearby and raided Miller's house about 10 minutes later.
Demartini said police also confiscated scales, packaging material and $5,600 in cash during the raid.
Police estimated the marijuana is worth about $75,000.
Miller was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver, and faced a mandatory prison sentence of six to 30 years.
Associate Judge George Bridges agreed to recommend the impact incarceration program, which is a military-style boot camp within prison, in exchange for Miller's guilty plea.
Bridges told Miller that if he does not successfully complete the impact incarceration program, he will have to serve the eight-year sentence.
