1906: John V. Hagemann, 32, of Elgin rescued David Schlueter, 36, a farmer, and Minnie Schlueter, 33, from a runaway carriage on June 22, 1906, in Elgin.
1911: Adam A. Oberst, 51, a Carpentersville stationary fireman, died saving Charles Carr, 39, from suffocation due to a broken gas pipe on Feb. 6, 1911, in Carpentersville.
1913: William R. Creighton, 72, of Elgin saved James DePew, 87, from being run over by a train on May 28, 1913, in Elgin.
1916: Merrill W. Roscoe, 13, of Batavia, saved Maud Keener, 21, and Elise Billing, 23, from drowning in the John Ryan Quarry Pond on Aug. 7, 1916, in Whitehouse, Ohio.
1918: Charles Louis Van Zandt, 36, of Elmhurst, saved an unidentified girl from being killed by a train on Feb. 16, 1918, in Chicago.
1921: Margaret Brennecke, 21, a student from Aurora helped in an attempt to save Esther Wepking, 23, and Arthur Harwood, 23, another student, from drowning on April 24, 1921, in Madison, Wis.
1929: E. Lyle Eldredge, 27, of Antioch saved Cecelia Duffy, 18, and James Duffy, 30, from drowning on Dec. 3, 1929, in Antioch.
1936: Ernest G. Starck, 40, an Aurora schoolteacher, saved Robert Beiler, 13, Joseph Weirich, 9, and Benedict Beilman, 20, from drowning in the Fox River on March 7, 1936, in Aurora.
1936: Benedict A. Beilman, 20, a student from Aurora, tried to save Joseph Weirich from drowning on March 7, 1936, in Aurora.
1941: Hattie F. Garrelts of Elgin rescued farmhand Carl Meier, 74, from an enraged bull on Nov. 25, 1941, in Elgin.
1963: James W. Routson, 22, of Lombard died attempting to save Cecil Callender, 59, from suffocation from the operation of a gasoline pump inside a well on July 19, 1963, in Pittsfield, Ill.
1966: Robert P. Connelly, 34, of Lisle died attempting to save Nancy Notto, 20, from being killed by a train on Sept. 23, 1966, in Lisle.
1967: Robert Wayne Levey, Sr., 30, of West Chicago helped save Raymond Cech and James Hamlin from suffocation on June 24, 1967, in West Chicago.
1975: Robert Alfred Kee, 28, of Wonder Lake saved Victoria Tenerowicz, 84, from being struck by a train on Nov. 19, 1975, in Park Ridge.
1975: Robert Duffy, Jr., 13, of Chicago died attempting to save Adam Bruesch, 14, from drowning in Turtlehead Lake on June 8, 1975, in Palos Heights.
1977: Gerald C. Pape, 24, of Palatine, saved Rosalie Karmik, 18, from being struck by a train on Oct. 20, 1977, in Palatine.
1978: Sam Washington, 76, of Chicago rescued Betty Krug, 74, and helped save Fred Krug, Sr., 77, from a burning vehicle that had rolled over after a highway accident on Oct. 21, 1978, in Prospect Heights.
1980: James Walter Polowy, 32, of Buffalo Grove saved Griciela Rodriquez, 49, from drowning in the Miami Canal on Feb. 14, 1980, in Hialeah, Florida.
1982: Larry A. Holder, 33, a police officer from Morton Grove, died trying to save a man from drowning in a swollen Crystal Creek on July 22, 1982, in Algonquin.
1985: Mark Alan Foss, 14, of Warrenville died helping save Jeanice Cooper, 12, from drowning as she played near the shore in the high waves of Lake Michigan on July 4, 1985, in South Haven, Mich.
1986: Albert B. Williams, 77, of Mount Prospect rescued Yetta Harris, 67, from assault on Dec. 17, 1986, in Rolling Meadows.
1988: Donna Marie Bell, 21, of Mundelein rescued 11-month-old Nichole Arends on March 7, 1988, when fire broke out in a bedroom of Arends' family's apartment.
1988: Christopher Bordeaux, 24, of Fox Lake died trying to save Ellen Dougherty, 28, from being struck by a train on Jan. 11, 1988, in Lake Forest.
1990: Richard M. O'Shea II, 31, of Lemont saved a girl from being struck by a train Nov. 5, 1990, in Villa Park.
1992: Paul Edward Crawford, 28, of Antioch saved James Kirwan, 14, from drowning in Center Lake on April 7, 1992, in Salem, Wis.
1993: John C. Stubner, 25, of Warrenville attempted to save Michael Deutsch, 16, from drowning in the Fox River on June 9, 1993, in North Aurora.
1994: Joseph T. Mathews, 33, a disabled janitor from Round Lake Park attempted to save Christian Mortensen, 26, from drowning in Lake Michigan on July 6, 1994, in Zion.
1994: Christian E. Mortensen, 26, of Waukegan died attempting to save Karen Remke, 24, from drowning in Lake Michigan on July 6, 1994, in Zion.
1995: James E. Rog, 15, and father Phillip E. Rog, 48, of South Elgin helped rescue Virginia Alvarado, 38, and five children from a van that caught fire after a two-vehicle highway accident on Aug. 20, 1995, in Oregon, Ill.
1997: Thomas S. Fredrickson, 31, of Schaumburg saved Alberto Lara, 5, from drowning in the Fox River on Feb. 2, 1997, in Algonquin.
2000: Benjamin David Wagner, 17, and his father David A. Wagner, 46, both of Cary, helped save Jacob MacLean, 9, from drowning in Lake Superior on Aug. 7, 2000, in Grand Marais, Mich.
2003: Sean Christopher Hough, 31, of Lake in the Hills helped rescue a one-year-old boy from a burning building on May 15, 2003, in McHenry.
2005: Anthony Blaskoski, 45, of St. Charles rescued William Gunderson, 49 and attempted to rescue Emma Gunderson, 5, on March 2, 2005, after fire broke out on the first floor of the Gunderson family's two-story house in Elburn.
2006: Bruce R. Sperling of Lombard died attempting to save Craig Fliege, 38, from drowning while kayaking in the Fox River on May 27, 2006, in Yorkville, Ill.
2008: Walter M. Gannon, 55, of Belvidere rescued fellow Elgin High School teacher Carolyn Gilbert, 50, from assault by a 16-year-old boy on Jan. 18, 2008, in Elgin.
2008: Adrian Alexander Jones, 16, of Maywood and Jimmy Avant, 18, of Chicago, died attempting to save Melvin Choice, Jr., 17, from drowning in the Fox River on Nov. 14, 2008, in Algonquin.
2008: Christopher Adam Skeet, 30, of Chicago helped save a 16-year-old boy from drowning in the flooded Des Plaines River on Sept. 15, 2008, in Des Plaines.
