Man held in theft from Libertyville gym
A Zion man is held on $25,000 bond after being charged with stealing a backpack from a locker in a Libertyville gym.
Officials said Monday that Alfred Apigo, 27, of the 2400 block of Mark Avenue, took car keys out of the backpack and stole a radar detector from another gym customer's car.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Christen Bishop said Apigo was at Xsport Gym, 1163 S. Milwaukee Ave., between 7 and 9:30 p.m. on April 16. During that time, another gym patron, a 26-year-old man from Long Grove, notified a locker room attendant that his backpack was missing from his locker.
The man saw the strap of his backpack sticking out of another locker, Bishop said, and the attendant cut the lock of that locker. The man's backpack was in the locker, along with a backpack owned by Apigo, Bishop said.
There was $200 in cash and a set of car keys missing from the Long Grove man's backpack, Bishop said, and the keys were found inside Apigo's backpack.
The Long Grove man checked his car and discovered his $250 radar detector was missing from the vehicle.
Apigo was taken into custody and refused to answer any questions, Bishop said.
He is charged with burglary to a motor vehicle and theft in the case, and faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Court records show he also has a pending forgery and theft case from Round Lake, and faces up to five years in prison in that case.
Apigo is scheduled to appear in court May 5 on the Round Lake charges and May 10 for the Libertyville case.
