Let Dist. 15 board do what it was elected to do

This letter is an appeal to the constituents of District 15 to support the board decision reached at the March 10 meeting to authorize a bond issue.

I have lived and worked closely with the board for the last 59 years. These individuals who are unselfishly motivated to serve on the board and give their time and expertise without compensation were elected to represent the constituents in the district.

They do so in the interest and welfare of children to whom they are responsible. I learned to admire and respect them as I witnessed their determination to sometime make unpopular decisions to protect that interest.

As seven members, there is not always unanimous agreement. That is a truly healthy approach, but when the majority agree, their decision should be respected.

The "track record" of the board has been admirable. They have faced many major decisions beginning with consolidation in 1946. Their efforts were finally realized in 2003 when the district was recognized with the nationally-coveted Baldrige award.

This was evidence of excellent board leadership and competent professional staff at all levels of the district.

Since consolidation, the constituents of District 15 have shown their appreciation by passing 20 referendums. The 21st referendum in 2005 for an increase in the educational tax rate from 2.51 percent to 2.99 percent was not approved because opponents took advantage of negative publicity regarding salaries.

How different would our financial situation be today if the constituents chose to support their Board of Education.

The present "movement" to petition the board to hold a referendum in November is simply a plan to again deny the board its right to represent all the people in the School District.

I am grateful that my two children, who have earned Master degrees and have achieved recognition, had the good fortune to attend classes in District 15 since kindergarten. Also my two grandchildren who attended since kindergarten have advanced degrees and successful positions. My granddaughter is presently completing her Doctorate studies.

I am grateful to District 15 for the excellent education it provided them during their elementary school experience.
