Batavia High to stage 'Joseph' this weekend

Batavia High School presents its spring musical, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, to Saturday, April 24, and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 25, in the high school cafetorium, 1200 W. Wilson St.

The cast, orchestra and stage crew of 90-plus students portray an enjoyable performance interwoven with brotherly love, humor, great music and faith.

Joseph's 11 jealous brothers sell him as a slave to Ishmaelites and return his magnificent coat of many colors to their father, Jacob, played by C.J. Chandler, and deceitfully tell him Joseph, portrayed by David Sands, has died.

Joseph saves himself from the depths of confinement by using his ability to interpret dreams to secure an interview with Pharoah, played by Paul Bartow. When the Pharoah calls upon Joseph to break down his dream, he predicts a famine in Egypt's future. Pharoah is so impressed that Joe goes from slave to one of the most powerful men of Egypt.

Joseph's brothers unwittingly come to him for relief during the famine and they are put to the test to see if they have changed.

This tale is narrated by Megan Scharlau and Denzel Tsopnang and includes musical styles from calypso to rock to disco to country.

Tickets are $7. Reserved seating is available, as well as plenty of general admission seating.

Tickets can be purchased from 10:50 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Batavia High School Main Street Atrium when school is in session, or 45 minutes before show time.
