Geneva schools hand out layoff notices
Twenty teachers, three psychologists and a speech-language pathologist, all full-time, nontenured, certified workers, were given layoff notices this week by Geneva School District 304.
Last year, the district gave notice to 36 full- and part-time nontenured certified workers, the equivalent of 23 full-time positions. Of the 36 workers, seven held full-time positions.
Craig Collins, the district's assistant superintendent for human resources, said the district expects to hire many back, but the time frame for doing so is uncertain.
No reason needs to be given for dismissing nontenured teachers with three or fewer years of experience with the district. Typically, many are rehired as student registration firms up, especially for specialized classes such as art and foreign languages.
Last year, the district rehired at least 26 of the people, plus hired 13 additional full-time people.
The district is looking to trim its operating budget by $1.4 million. The board decided in March to cut the hours of many support workers, including library assistants, to help make that goal.
The new budget year begins July 1, and the budget is required to be set by Sept. 30.
