Des Plaines man dies after tree branch fall

A Des Plaines man who was critically injured when a large tree branch fell on his van Wednesday in Chicago has died.

Jerzy Szczepanek, 33, of the 300 block of Oak Street, was declared dead Friday morning, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Szczepanek was traveling southbound on Cumberland Avenue near Addison Street on Chicago's far northwest side at around 7:18 a.m. when a tree from a stretch of forest preserve along the road fell on top of the vehicle, authorities said.

Szczepanek was in critical condition at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge before dying.
