Chicago man charged in Elgin armed robbery

A 24-year-old Chicago man has been charged in connection with a Wednesday night armed robbery on Elgin's east side.

Andres Oquendo of the 4300 block of West Shakespeare Avenue, is charged with armed robbery, a Class X felony that upon conviction carries a prison sentence ranging between six and 30 years.

Police said that at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oquendo approached the victim on the street in the 600 block of Slade Avenue, pointed a gun at him and yelled in Spanish, "Give me everything you have."

Reports said that the victim threw his wallet on the ground and that Oquendo stole $395 out of it - the victim said that five hours earlier he had been paid from his job.

Oquendo fled the scene in a black Jeep Liberty and the victim reported the license plate number to police, reports said.

The plate number led officers to a home in the 1200 block of Bradley Circle - where Oquendo's girlfriend and her daughter live, reports said.

Both were home when police arrested Oquendo inside the house and recovered the .45 caliber gun from the Jeep - it was hidden underneath a car seat, reports said.

Kane County Judge Bruce W. Lester set Oquendo's bond at $200,000 Friday morning.

Oquendo's next court date is April 22 at the Kane County Judicial Center; he was unable to post bond and was awaiting court from the Kane County lockup.

According to bond call proceedings, Oquendo has 18 prior arrests and three felony convictions for burglary, robbery and assault.

Misdemeanor convictions include larceny and assault.
