Ammunition find adds to charges against Arlington Heights man

Jason Jakob's legal troubles continued Thursday as a Cook County circuit court judge ordered the Arlington Heights man held without bail after his arrest Wednesday on a charge of possessing firearm ammunition without a valid Firearm Owners Identification card.

Jakob, 39, had been free on bond on several gun felony charges following a March encounter in which he is alleged to have shot off between 40 and 50 rounds of ammunition in his house on the 900 block of Harvard Avenue. In December, Jakob was accused of violating conditions of his bond on those charges, and his bond was increased.

Among the conditions of Jakob's original bond, reinforced along with additional conditions in his second case, was a prohibition against possessing weapons. Arlington Heights police arrested Jakob Wednesday after neighbors reported seeing him carrying large rifle boxes from his residence, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Mike Andre.

The boxes were empty, Andre said, but during a subsequent search of Jakob's residence, police recovered one box containing 20 rounds of rifle ammunition. However, police found no weapons at Jakob's home, Andre said.

The new charge this week, a misdemeanor, carries a possible sentence of 364 days in jail. Jakob's next court date is April 26 in Rolling Meadows.
