No trash burning:Thermal or chemical conversion of trash could join incineration as alternative waste disposal methods to be dropped from the proposed update of Lake County's solid waste management plan. A majority of the members of the county's public works and transportation on Wednesday agreed with opponents that thermal or chemical conversion should not be considered in the plan update. Incineration was dropped in February in what has become a lengthy and sometimes controversial process. Recommendations include a task force be formed by July 1 to determine how to significantly boost recycling rates. The full county board on Tuesday will consider the new solid waste management plan.Lakes High School's first perfect score:A junior at Lakes Community High School in Lake Villa scored the school's first 36 on the college entrance exam, the ACT. Hilde Nelson achieved the score on her first attempt at the exam. She hopes to study English and history next fall but has not yet decided on a school. The high school opened its doors in 2004. No student has scored a 36 until Nelson. Less than 1 percent of students who take the exam score a 36.Band leader to be honored:Libertyville High School band director Don Shupe will honored Saturday, April 10, with a public reception. It's scheduled to run from 2 to 5 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 29700 N. St. Mary's Road, Libertyville. Shupe, who has led Libertyville High's band since 1974, will retire at the end of this school year.Household waste pickup in Antioch:The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County hosts a household waste pick up on Saturday, April 17, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Antioch Public Works Department, 769 Holbek Drive. Accepted items include motor oil, solvents, paint removers and thinners, aerosol products, pesticides, gasoline, and unwanted medicines or prescriptions. Fireworks and ammunition, fire extinguishers, household electronics and latex paint are among the items that are not accepted. Visit www.swalco.org.
