YMCA swimmers bring home medals
Twenty-two swimmers represented the Elgin Pelican YMCA Swim Team March 20-21 at the Illinois/Missouri Area YMCA Championships in DeKalb.
The Pelican 8-and-under 100-meter freestyle relay team of Lynette Schlueter, Riley Seagren, Katie Wisler and Winnie Wu took first place out of 28 teams.
Only the eight fastest times make it to the final afternoon session.
Schlueter, Seagren, Wisler and Samantha Holesha started the afternoon with the 100-meter individual medley relay.
Seeded fourth in the race, they swam to an exciting third-place finish.
Individually, Winnie Wu finished sixth in the 25-meter butterfly while Lynette Schlueter placed 14th.
Wu also placed 14th in the 25-meter freestyle. Wisler and Seagren finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 50-meter freestyle and 11th and 13th in the 100-meter individual medley.
The 8-and-under age group finished third overall out of 33 teams. Willa Wu represented the 9-10 girls, finishing fifth overall in the 50-meter butterfly.
Other relays swimming at state include the 9-10 boys freestyle relay, 15th place - Reid Coyle, Eric Santiago, Marco LoPiccolo and Colin Wisler. The 9-10 boys medley relay, 16th place - Nathan Price, Colin Wisler, Reid Coyle and Marco LoPiccolo.
The 11-12 girls freestyle relay, 10th place - Kristin Kowaleski, Hannah St. John, Caroline Washer-Puchek and Echo Boehm. The 11-12 girls medley relay, 14th place - Willa Wu, Caroline Washer-Puchek, Shianne Brewer, Echo Boehm.
Other results are: Willa Wu, 9, 12th place in 100-meter IM, fifth place in 50-meter butterfly, 10th place in 50-meter backstroke; Colin Wisler, 10, 15th place in 50-meter freestyle; Shianne Brewer, 10, 16th place in 100-meter IM, 10th place in 50-meter butterfly; Echo Boehm, 12, 15th place in 200-meter freestyle; and Caroline Washer-Puchek, 12, 15th place in 50-meter breaststroke.
Registration for the 2010 summer season will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, at the YMCA, 50 N. McLean Blvd. in Elgin.
