Lakes finishes with a Florida victory; Antioch splits

Lakes' softball team ended its "magical" experience by splitting four games.

Playing in Disney's Magic Kingdom, the Eagles concluded their tournament with a 4-3 win over West Salem.

Shannon Cooley scattered 5 hits while striking out 10. Nicole Speck was 4-for-4 and her younger sister Michelle went 3-for-4 to pace Lakes' offense.

"There were some very tough teams down here and it was a great experience," Eagles coach Bill Hamill said.

On Thursday, Lakes lost to Winchester (Ohio) 4-2, despite a 6-hitter by Cooley.

"Winchester is a consistent state threat in Ohio," Hamill said. "The girls bonded well (on the trip), and now it is time to come back home and take care of the business that is ahead of us.

"The last game in Disney, all 16 players that came down got into the game in some aspect which is a great thing considering we also got the win."

Lakes' scheduled home game against Belvidere North on Saturday was rained out.

Antioch splits at Barrington: After rain delayed the beginning of Barrington's quad, it turned out to be worth the wait for the Sequoits.

Against the host Fillies, Antioch took a 3-0 lead after Sammie Seamon hit a solo homer and Amber Mysliwiec and Jess Liszka both singled and scored in the second inning.

Barrington jumped back in front with a 6-run fifth before Antioch scored a single run in the fifth, and Allie Anttila drew the Sequoits with 1 with a solo homer in the sixth before Barrington prevailed 6-5.

Against Schaumburg, Antioch trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Six hits and 2 walks later, the Sequoits had tied it up, and they won it 6-5 in the bottom of the 10th when Seamon drove in Anttila with a hit. Lauren Moore had 2 hits and Olivia Duehr had 3 for Antioch to make a winner of pitcher Sam Kozenski.
