Downers South grad could've been on this Butler ride

When Elliot Engelmann signed on to play at Butler before the 2006-07 season, he looked like an ideal fit for the Bulldogs' offense. The Downers Grove South HS standout was a 6-foot-7 power forward/center type with an excellent 3-point shot.

But after seeing limited minutes in his first two seasons -- and seeing ballyhooed recruits like Gordon Hayward and Shelvin Mack ready to join the program -- Engelmann decided to leave Butler and transfer to Div. II Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. after the 2007-08 season.

"I was a part of some great teams my freshman and sophomore years," Engelmann said. "I could see they were bringing in high-major players and I was pretty much a mid-major. It was a tough choice, but I like to play. I had a great time playing at Mercyhurst."
