Davis scores twice as Glenbard West gets tourney win
Glenbard West managed to win two of three games in the Grayslake North girls soccer tournament, including a 2-0 shutout of Dundee-Crown on Thursday afternoon.
Lauren Davis scored both goals, and Molly Abromitis and Maddie Nelson each had assists.
Hilltoppers goalkeeper Michelle Vonachen made 4 saves for the shutout.
"I thought a number of freshmen and sophomores stepped up their game," said Glenbard West coach Maciej Kusmierz, who had missed several starters for spring break. "(Young players) do have a lot of time to improve at the varsity level. I give them credit for stepping up and doing their best.
"We were just unlucky with our first game (a 2-1 loss to Grayslake North). Too bad we couldn't play at full strength in the tournament."
Davis got Glenbard West on the board in the 34th minute. She took a pass from Abromitis and sailed a shot into the far corner.
"It was kind of hard with the wind changing the direction of the ball," said Davis, who has scored 3 goals this season. "I just tried to get the foot around the ball. It was good to get a goal before the half with the wind."
Glenbard West (3-2) pushed against the wind in the second half. Davis struck again 90 seconds into play off an assist from Nelson.
Dundee-Crown (3-2-2) for the second straight day was held scoreless and had a tough time setting up in the midfield to the offensive third of the field.
"Bottom line comes down to connecting passes in the midfield," Dundee-Crown coach Sebastian Falinski said. "The last couple of games our central midfield has been nonexistent.
"Glenbard West had (Abromitis) in the midfield doing whatever she could do. We just have to keep working at it. I thought with the wind (in the second half), we could put the pressure on, but we couldn't do it."
