St. Charles power outage affects thousands

A power outage Thursday affected thousands of customers in and around downtown St. Charles, a city official said.

The outage was reported at 1:12 p.m. after two substations lost a major electrical feed from ComEd, said Glynn Amburgey, the city's electric and communications manager. It took about 30 minutes to repair.

There was no official count of customers affected, but Amburgey said it included thousands in the immediate downtown area along Route 64 and the city's southwest quadrant.

"They're (ComEd) still patrolling, still evaluating to see what the problem was," he said about two hours after power returned.

The last major outage in St. Charles was Dec. 24, 2009, according to the city.
