Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism has awarded a New York Times journalist its Medal for Courage.

David Rohde was kidnapped and held in Afghanistan for more than seven months. He was cited for his 2009 series titled "Held by the Taliban."

The Evanston-based school's award goes to the journalist or team of journalists working for U.S.-based media who display moral, ethical or physical courage in pursuit of a story.

Rohde was in Afghanistan in 2008 working on a book. While on his way to meet a Taliban commander outside Kabul, he, an Afghan journalist and a driver were kidnapped. He later managed to escape.

In his series, Rohde's described the continual threat of beheading and his feelings of helplessness.
