Small fire leads to evacuation of Gurnee Sam's Club

Customers were evacuated from Sam's Club in Gurnee after a rotisserie oven used to cook chicken caught on fire around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Gurnee firefighters arrived at the store, 6570 Grand Ave., and found black smoke coming out of the exhaust vent and the automatic fire suppression system started, officials said. Firefighters evacuated the building and put the rest of the fire out with hand extinguishers. Customers were kept out of the store for about 15 minutes while officials investigated.

The fire destroyed the oven, which store officials told firefighters was worth about $13,000. Fire officials are investigating why the fire started, including talking to the manufacturer of the oven and other stores to see if other Sam's Club locations have had the same problem.
