Warren Twp. workshop focuses on test anxiety
Most students occasionally struggle with test jitters or feeling overwhelmed by homework sometimes. But when these issues become chronic, academic success may suffer. Not to mention confidence.
At Warren Township Youth and Family Services, therapist Katie Salyer recently presented a workshop addressing study skills and test anxiety. Upon arrival, the students identified their key areas of struggle. While most were encouraged by their parents to attend, they all acknowledged that the challenges they experienced were real.
"It was clear that some of the most important issues the students wanted to explore were organizational skills and time management in class and home," Salyer said. While some time was committed to discuss how best to manage memorization and attention related issues, the majority of the time was devoted to study strategies and demonstrating breathing and self-talk to manage anxiety.
The presenter noted that the students were encouraged to openly communicate with parents and teachers about any persistent issues.
"I found that the students enjoyed the interactive discussion," Salyer said. "While they may have been surprised to find a classmate at the workshop, they appeared reassured by the commonality."
As a result of the overwhelming interest in the workshop, Youth Services will be offering a repeat session.
"I was amazed by the number of people who called with interest, but had a time conflict," said Adam Krieger, the Executive Director. "As long as we have the audience, we're happy to have the workshop again."
The workshop "Study Skills and Test Anxiety" will be presented from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, April 26, at Warren Township Youth and Family Services, 17801 W. Washington St., Gurnee. Parents or students may register for this free workshop online at wtysworkshops.eventbrite.com, or call (847) 244-1101, ext. 401. The workshop is for ages 12-18 only.
