Gullo lifts Lake Zurich

Junior pitcher Ben Gullo gave Lake Zurich's baseball team what coach Gary Simon called a "shot in the arm," as the host Bears pulled out a wild one over Waukegan on Friday.

Lake Zurich won 10-9 in six innings, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth after the Bulldogs had plated 6 runs in the top of the frame.

Gullo started and pitched 4 1/3 innings of 1-hit ball, but he got a no-decision. He struck out seven, walked three and allowed 3 runs (2 earned).

Lake Zurich (1-2) was led offensively by Kyle Sanders (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Chris Baumann (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Ryan Baartmans (2-for-3, RBI). Justin Russell added a double.

"I'm proud of our kids being down 4 runs in the last inning and coming back with solid hitting," Simon said.

Baartmans earned the win, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.
