Firefighters give kids first look at new mobile training unit

A handful of Lake and McHenry County fire departments dedicated a new mobile fire safety house last month.

Fire officials and firefighters from throughout the region, along with elementary school students and school superintendents and executives from DeWitt Stern Insurance and Fireman's Fund Insurance Co., came together for a special event to unveil the fire safety house - and show off its features.

The mobile unit is used to educate children and adults on how to respond in certain home emergencies. The fire safety house is a large modified mobile unit that can simulate fire, smoke and heat in a house in order to teach safety and fire escape techniques. The fire departments provide extensive fire safety education to thousands of elementary schoolchildren and adults each year through fire prevention and life safety education.

The mobile fire house was made possible by a $23,000 grant from DeWitt Stern and Fireman's Fund Insurance Co.
