Russian official resigns after Vancouver flop

MOSCOW -- A second Russian sports official has resigned after the country's dismal performance at the Vancouver Olympics.

The ITAR-Tass news agency reported Friday that deputy sports minister Gennady Alyoshin, who was responsible for getting the Russian team ready for Vancouver, had stepped down.

Russia placed 11th in the medals table with only three golds, two fewer than its previous low in Salt Lake City in 2002. Russia was sixth in the overall medal count with 15 medals.

The results proved particularly embarrassing for a country that will host the next Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014.

Russian Olympic Committee chief Leonid Tyagachev handed in his resignation two weeks ago.
