Round Lake Park man accused of bringing bat to gang fight

One man is in custody for using a bat to injure others during a gang fight in Round Lake Park on Monday, police officials said.

Jose Acevedo, 23, of the 400 block of Center Lane in Round Lake Park, has been charged by the Lake County state's attorney's office with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery in a public way, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia, Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko said.

Filenko said police were called to the 400 block of Center Lane at about 7 p.m. Monday regarding a fight where baseball bats were being used.

Officers arriving at the scene found five people who had been slightly injured after being assaulted in the alleged gang fight, Filenko said.

"Apparently the five were walking down the street when a purple or maroon van pulled up and five guys with baseball bats - one with a knife - jumped out and attacked them," he said. "After the attack, the offenders jumped back in the van and fled the area."

He said two of the victims were treated by paramedics but refused to be taken to a hospital.

Officials said the department's gang unit took over the investigation and arrested Acevedo Tuesday evening. He said additional warrants have been issued against two other people.

"This was clearly one gang attacking another gang," he said.

Police also discovered two clear plastic bags containing rocks that field-tested positive for cocaine, he said.

Acevedo remains in Lake County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

The incident remains under investigation, Filenko said.
