Downers Grove man charged in I-55 pileup

A Downers Grove man has been charged with felony driving under the influence after police say he caused an accident while attempting to park on the shoulder of I-55 late Sunday evening.

Robert Blake, 46, of the 7000 block of Woodward Avenue, who was driving on a revoked license, was charged with felony DUI, Illinois State Police said.

Blake was southbound on the expressway near I-355 at about 8 p.m. Sunday night when he pulled over and attempted to park on the shoulder, police said.

But Blake didn't make it all the way onto the shoulder, and parked his vehicle with its rear-end blocking part of the left lane, officials said.

He was rear-ended after stopping the car, officials said. His vehicle spun out of control, into traffic, then was hit by a truck, a semi and an SUV.

Three people, including Blake, were treated at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and released Sunday night, police said.

Traffic was shut down in two left lanes for about four hours while police investigated the incident.
