Rivalry abounds in story of 'Amadeus'

PM&L Theatre in Antioch is proud to present its fourth show of Season 49, Peter Shaffer's "Amadeus."

Considered one of the most powerful dramas of the past half-century - and the winner of both a Tony Award and an Oscar - this provocative story weaves a confrontation between mediocrity and genius into a tale of breathtaking dramatic power. The play begins in Vienna, on the last night of composer Antonio Salieri's life, and then moves back 30 years earlier to show the relationship between Salieri and his greatest musical rival, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. "Amadeus" pits the cunning but mediocre Salieri against his unwilling nemesis, Mozart, but Salieri's war isn't really with Mozart, it's with a God who would choose to bless Mozart with the gifts that Salieri feels he deserves.

When the disgruntled Salieri vows to destroy God's creation (Amadeus), the tables are set for an epic battle of trust and betrayal, love and blinding hatred.

Directed by Donna Abear and stage-managed by Kathy LeFave, both of Antioch, the cast includes new and familiar faces from the area: L. Stephen Phelan of Gurnee (Antonio Salieri); Jason Clark of Waukegan (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart); Lori Bolas of Libertyville (Constanze); John Haderlein of Libertyville (Joseph II); Bob Wang of Bristol, Wis.
