Cundari continuing battlein Kane County board race
Lorena Cundari hoped to see some votes swing her way this week in a provisional recount in her race against Gerald Jones for Kane County Board District 7. Instead, she witnessed a lot of ballots she believes should be tossed out completely.
Cundari and Jones met for a discovery recount of two precincts in an Aurora race that currently has Cundari 14 votes behind the most senior Democrat on the county board. The results of the recount didn't alter the outcome of the race voters saw on election night. At least not yet.
Cundari said she was appalled at the number of ballots cast with excessive scribbles and multiple markings tantamount to "mutilation." She also said there were a number of applications for ballots that lacked initialing from election judges and appeared to have bogus signatures of voters compared to their voter registration cards. So instead of giving up, Cundari is looking to pair up with some legal experts and election scholars to determine how to pursue her quest for at least 15 more votes in her favor.
"It's not over," Cundari said.
Jones had a distinctly different view of the race and recount.
"It's over and done," Jones said. Jones said Cundari would rather drag out a costly recount process that puts a time strain on all the election officials rather than admit defeat.
"She needs to turn her attention to future races and let it go," Jones said.
Cundari wasn't interested in Jones' plans for her future.
"I'm only 14 votes down and he's giving me campaign advice?"
