Breeders dump dogs to skirt new law
MARATHON, Wis. -- At least one central Wisconsin animal shelter has been inundated with dogs because of a new state law regulating breeders.
The no-kill shelter, New Life Pet Adoption Center in Marathon, has taken in 25 dogs in the last several months, but has a capacity of up to 12 dogs.
Clark County Humane Society director Chuck Wegner says there are about 2,500 dogs living in so-called puppy mills in his county. Wegner says in some cases, the breeders are more concerned with volume and profit than in caring for the dogs.
The Wausau Daily Herald says Gov. Jim Doyle signed a law in December that requires breeders who sell more than 25 animals a year to be licensed. It also requires breeders to provide dogs with enough food, shelter and exercise.
