2 charged after St. Charles overdose

Two men face drug-related charges after their friend overdosed on heroin last week near St. Charles, police said Thursday.

Kane County sheriff's deputies responded to the area of Park and Salina avenues at 7:05 a.m. Saturday after Lee C. Coleman, 23, of South Elgin, called 911 to report his friend had overdosed on heroin, according to a police report.

At the scene, deputies found Coleman rendering aid to his friend, and he also provided them the syringe that apparently was used. The 25-year-old man who overdosed was rushed to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where his condition stabilized.

Through interviews, investigators learned Coleman, the overdose victim and David M. Savchenko, 20, of St. Charles, had purchased $80 worth of heroin earlier in the day and spent the morning "shooting up" together, police said.

Both Coleman and Savchenko were charged with unlawful possession of a hypodermic syringe, a Class A misdemeanor, and Coleman was charged additionally with obstructing justice, also a misdemeanor. Lt. Pat Gengler said it's possible the overdose victim, who also lives in St. Charles, will be charged, too, depending on results of tests sent to the state crime lab.

Neither Coleman, of the 400 block of Ann Street, nor Savchenko, of the 35W300 block of Park Avenue, was listed in custody at the county jail Thursday, and it was unclear if they had attorneys. They're due in court April 21.
