Manny Harris leads Michigan past Iowa 59-52

INDIANAPOLIS -- Manny Harris had 22 points and nine rebounds to help Michigan defeat Iowa 59-52 on Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.

DeShawn Sims added 14 points for the Wolverines (15-16), who advanced to play No. 5 Ohio State on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Iowa freshman Cully Payne scored a season-high 25 points and made five 3-pointers for Iowa (10-22). He had scored a combined four points his previous two games. He was 9 for 16 from the field, but the rest of the team shot 13 for 40.

Aaron Fuller added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Hawkeyes.

Michigan had lost four of its previous five games but won all three games against the Hawkeyes this season.

Iowa closed the season by losing six of seven.

Iowa trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half, but Payne hit a 3-pointer with 15:30 remaining in the game to cut Michigan's lead to 34-30.

Michigan's Zack Novak hit a 3-pointer, and a short jumper by Harris pushed the Wolverines' lead back to nine. A 3-point play by Zack Gibson pushed the lead to 42-32 with 12 minutes to play.

Iowa made one last push. Payne made a pullup in the lane, then Gatens had a steal and layup to cut Michigan's lead to 57-52 with 1:18 to play.

Iowa had a chance to cut the lead to two, but Gatens missed a 3 from the left corner with 23 seconds to play. Harris made two free throws at the other end to close the scoring.

Harris scored 12 points in the first 12 minutes to help Michigan take a 26-11 lead.

Iowa responded with a 7-2 run, including a 3-pointer by Payne, to trim Michigan's advantage to 28-18 and force the Wolverines to call a timeout.

A 3-pointer by Payne with 48 seconds left in the first half cut Michigan's lead to 32-23, a score that stood until the break.

Payne, who averages 8.1 points per game, scored 13 points in the first half. He scored 11 points in the final nine minutes before the break, including three 3-pointers.
