Reasons to support video gambling
State Sen. Mike Noland is right to support the Illinois capital plan and the 439,000 jobs it will create or sustain over the next five years.
When the Illinois unemployment rate is over 10 percent, it is important for our legislators to do everything they can to create jobs and get the hardworking men and women of Illinois back to work.
Before we criticize funding mechanisms, it's important to point out that this plan passed with broad support from both Democrats and Republicans. Legalized video gaming was supported by both parties because everyone shared a desire to make needed investments to help our economy recover and put people back to work.
Proposed gaming terminals will be highly regulated and tied directly into a state system, just like Illinois Lottery machines. The lottery has been successfully managed throughout the state for over 30 years. With this in mind, it's inaccurate to characterize legalized gaming as untested and unstable.
I do not want any more men and women to lose their jobs or delay the projects that will help our communities. Let's all show our support for the full implementation capital plan and the new gaming system that will fund it.
