Motorola adds Microsoft's Bing to Android Smartphones in China

Motorola Inc., the largest U.S. mobile-phone maker, is adding Microsoft Corp.'s Bing search engine and maps service to phones that use Google Inc.'s Android operating system.

Bing will be preloaded onto devices sold in China starting in the current quarter, Schaumburg, Illinois-based Motorola said today in a statement. Updates will be available for phones already in the market, the company said.

Motorola is aiming to bolster sales for the first time since 2006 by rebuilding its handset business around Android software. The Droid phone, which runs Android, was introduced in November. Microsoft is trying to bolster sales in the search market, dominated by Google, and has gained market share for nine straight months.

Motorola rose 14 cents to $7.11 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, gained 17 cents to $28.97 on the Nasdaq Stock Market, while Mountain View, California-based Google climbed $16.26 to $576.45.
