86-year-old admits pointing BB gun at cop, gets supervision

An 86-year-old Huntley man was sentenced to court supervision and counseling after admitting to allegations he pulled a BB gun on an officer inside the village's police station during a dispute over a parking ticket.

Peter S. Reilly, of the 12900 block of Penefield Lane, will undergo a psychiatric evaluation and possible counseling. He also was ordered to pay $218 in court costs under terms of a negotiated plea in which he was found guilty of a misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon.

The charge stemmed from a Sept. 26 incident in which Reilly walked into the police station and confronted a sergeant working the front desk about a citation he had received for parking in a handicap spot.

During the discussion, police said, Reilly became angry, pulled out what appeared to be a black handgun and pointed it at the officer, who was behind a glass partition. Other officers responded and managed to seize the weapon before shots were fired.

Reilly could not be reached for comment Monday morning. A phone number listed for him in court records had been disconnected.

Assistant McHenry County State's Attorney Demetri Tsilimigras said his office spoke with Huntley police before agreeing to the plea deal.

"We believe, especially with the sergeant's approval, that this would be an appropriate disposition, particularly since there is a counseling component," he said.
