Buehrle looks 'sharp' in spring debut, but Sox lose
GLENDALE, Ariz. - Vicente Padilla threw 2 hitless innings and Reed Johnson drove in a pair of runs, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 8-3 win over the White Sox on Friday.
The Dodgers played most of their projected starters in their spring training opener at Camelback Ranch. Regular left fielder Manny Ramirez was the designated hitter and had a pair of singles in 3 at-bats.
Los Angeles got its first run off Mark Buehrle, slated to be the Sox' opening-day starter. The left-hander allowed an unearned run and 3 hits in 2 innings. A passed ball in the second put Casey Blake at third base before Johnson got his first RBI.
"Buehrle looked sharp," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Every spring training he comes with some fatigue or feels something here or there. This year we don't have any complaints about it."
Guillen also said he was pleased with reliever J.J. Putz's 1-inning, 2-strikeout performance.
"I didn't even know he throws a forkball. I thought it was a changeup," Guillen said.
• Gavin Floyd will pitch Monday against Seattle for the White Sox, his first start of spring training. ... The White Sox will send a split squad today to Mesa, the Cubs' spring training home. Asked about facing the Cubs five times in the spring and six in the regular season, Guillen was incredulous. "Lou Piniella, we'll kick your butt," he said with a wry smirk.
