Habitat plans big year in Kane County

If there's one good byproduct of the bad economy, it's that foreclosed homes can be bought at discount prices.

And that - along with a history of helping others and a strong volunteer base - is part of why Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley is looking to rehab and sell 10 homes this calendar year.

The Carpentersville-based group also plans to do 10 exterior spruce-ups of homes through "A Brush with Kindness" program.

"This year is our 20th anniversary, so our goal is to do 20 projects," said Bill Klaves, Habitat's development director.

Habitat officials announced their plans this week during an open house and after-hours event at ReStore, a 40,000-square-foot location that opened at 800 N. State St., Elgin, in April 2006.

ReStore accepts tax-deductible donations of new or used materials from residents, builders and big box companies.

It's like a Goodwill store for home improvement needs, plus it keeps items out of landfills.

Klaves said the most homes Habitat has built in a year - typically from April through November - is six.

But with vacancies high and prices low, the rehab projects make the most sense for the area right now.

Teams will work on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

"It's a wonderful volunteer experience. It gives people a sense of accomplishment," Klaves said.

Klaves said officials are targeting areas in Elgin, Carpentersville, St. Charles and unincorporated spots in the county for the rehabs, but it doesn't matter where Brush With Kindness recipients live.

The latter project can be completed in a day or two and usually involves painting a home's exterior and improving landscaping.

Lower income residents may obtain an application by calling (847) 836-1432.

"We're going to run the (Brush With Kindness) program for many years. We're going to take the first 10 (applicants)," Klaves said.
