14 years for Aurora child molester

An Aurora man convicted of having sexual contact with a child he baby-sat has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, authorities said Friday.

A Kane County jury convicted Jerald E. Spring, 63, on one count of predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, and four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse on Nov. 17, 2009. He was sentenced Thursday by Associate Judge Patricia P. Golden.

According to the state's attorney's office, Spring had sexual contact with a victim younger than 13 while baby-sitting the child over a period of about three months in early 2007.

Under state law, he must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, or about 12 years, with credit for 108 days served in the county jail while awaiting trial. Spring also must register for life as a sex offender and avoid contact with the victim after his release.
