Scouting Aurora Central Catholic vs. Oswego
Class 3A Aurora Central Catholic regional final
No. 1 Oswego (21-6) vs. No. 3 Aurora Central (16-11)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Outlook: For Aurora Central's victory Wednesday over archrival Marmion, the Chargers are rewarded with the defending Class 3A state runner-up - which bounced Aurora Central at the 2009 Oswego regional final. These Panthers, who opened the playoffs with a 68-44 win over Yorkville, return its frontcourt intact from the team that lost the 2009 3A title game thriller, 61-59 to Champaign Centennial. All at least 6-foot-4 - Joe Kwiatkowski, center and Eastern Illinois football recruit Colin Seibert, and Andrew Ziemnik, who Aurora Central coach Nate Drye believes is all-state material. "He's an absolute monster with scoring, rebounding and passing," Drye wrote in an e-mail. "Their size is going to hurt us and they have a lot of depth. We'll have to get the tempo up and hope Joe (Guth) goes crazy." The 6-foot-3 shooting guard Guth, with 102 3's on the season, had what for him was a below-average 16 points, following point guard Steve Hollon's game-high 19 points in the 64-49 win over No. 2 seed Marmion. While ACC - which seeks its second regional title in three seasons and its 12th overall - may lack great height, its 6-foot-3 big men Paul Kaminski and Ken Brauweiller each impacted. Tonight both must remain calm, stay in the game and box out so the Chargers can get the long rebounds from shots by Guth, Hollon, Ryan Harreld and Joey McEachern.
