Lake Co. firefighters getting close shave for charity
Firefighters with the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District are getting their razors sharp - and their heads ready - for an upcoming fundraiser.
For the second consecutive year, crews will be shaving heads to raise money to fight juvenile cancer through the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. March 20 at the Cubby Bear North, 21611 N. Milwaukee Ave., Lincolnshire. It's actually being organized by the firefighters union, the International Association of Firefighters Local 4224.
Since the first St. Baldrick's event in 2000, the foundation has raised more than $68 million for cancer research and fellowships. More than 106,000 people have shaved their heads to show solidarity for children who lose their hair because of cancer treatments.
Last year, 110 heads were shaved as part of the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods event, raising $27,290 for the effort.
Officials hope to top those totals this year.
Other St. Baldrick's events are being held throughout the Chicago area this month.
Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Jerseys Pizza & Grill in Hoffman Estates, Mickey Finn's in Libertyville, Antonucci Salon & Spa in Kildeer and Salon Glow in Gurnee are among the many hosts.
