Orval Kent recalls dips over salmonella fears

Orval Kent Food Co. in Wheeling announced Thursday that it is voluntarily recalling multiple dips as a precautionary measure because the product may be contaminated with salmonella.

The Orval Kent dips are being recalled because they contain HVP (hydrolyzed vegetable protein) manufactured, distributed and recalled by Basic Food Flavors Inc., Las Vegas, NV.

Culinary CircleT Cucumber Dill Dip, Culinary CircleT Spinach Dip and Culinary CircleT Pesto Ranch Dip with use by dates between 12/12/09 and 4/16/10 are being recalled. Orval Kent is also recalling Jewel brand Spinach Dip sold at Jewel stores in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. To date, Orval Kent has not received any reports of illnesses in connection with the items. Consumers who have recently purchased the items should not consume this product and should return it the store of purchase for a full refund or replacement.

Salmonella is a common food borne pathogen that can cause severe illnesses, including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. While most individuals recover in three to five days without medical intervention, the infection can be life-threatening to young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Consumers with any of these symptoms should call their physician.
