Help Elgin homeless give a little help to Haiti
On Sunday, Feb. 28, join PADS of Elgin for "Eat Your Heart Out: Elgin Homeless Bring Hope for Haiti" at the Douglas L. Hoeft Resource Center, 1730 Berkley St., Elgin. The pancake brunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and raise money exclusively for Haitian disaster relief.
Few people in this community know as well as those that are homeless what it is like to be without basic needs. As a result, many guests of PADS were motivated to find a way to help the victims of the Haitian earthquake. The staff of PADS is supporting their efforts.
"After the earthquake, some guests came to us and said 'We realize we aren't in the best situation, but we have 3 meals a day and a roof over our heads at night, and these people don't have anything'," said PADS Executive Director Dennis Hewitt. "These guests wanted to find a way that they could help and we worked with them to come up with this event."
One hundred percent of the proceeds from this brunch will be donated to the Elgin Rotary Club in support of their Shelter Boxes for Haiti Program, which will send tents and boxes of needed items to the region.
"Hopefully we can raise enough money to help the people who really need it," said one PADS guest who is working on the project. "We know how hard it is to try and get by when it seems like you have nothing, and nobody deserves that. We hope this will help some people to be able to survive."
Ticket cost for this brunch is $10 per person, $5 per child and $25 per family. For information, call the PADS office at (847) 608-9744 or visit padsofelgin.org.
