To sum up, it's Hersey's night in win over Libertyville
Quarter four. Three vs. two.
One dominating performance.
Zero doubt as to which team deserved to win Tuesday night's Class 4A girls basketball sectional semifinal at Libertyville.
Trailing by two points after three quarters, second-seeded Hersey outscored No. 3 Libertyville by a whopping 24-4 margin in the fourth to win going away, 61-43. The win earned the Huskies (25-7) a berth in Thursday's 7:30 p.m. sectional final against fellow Mid-Suburban League member and No. 8 seed Barrington (19-12), which lost twice to Hersey during the regular season.
"We broke the press very well, the posts were dishing it to each other a lot, which helped, and it just all fell together," Hersey guard Andrea Perkins said of the unfathomable fourth. "It was one of the most exciting quarters of my entire life."
It was just the opposite for Libertyville (25-6), which appeared in good position to win for the 20th time in its last 21 games after Katelynn Jennings' 3-pointer had the Wildcats up 39-37 after three quarters.
But Hersey's 6-foot senior Maddie Swan hit a hook shot to open the fourth. Perkins scored on an offensive rebound and then fed Julia Fredian for a backdoor layup. A Libertyville timeout failed to stop the Huskies' momentum.
Oliva Wilcox (12 points on 6-of-9 shooting) finally scored for Libertyville, pulling the Wildcats within 45-41 with 5:17 left. But Hersey's Megan Rogowski followed with a layup and runner, and the rout was on.
"They kept burning us on the exact same play," Jennings said. "It was a weakside pass and I think an up screen on the opposite side. We just kept following the post, who was setting the back screen.
"They played well. I have to hand it to them."
In her final game in a Libertyville uniform, Jennings scored a team-high 13 points, hitting her first 5 shots, including three 3-pointers and a pair of 19-footers.
"She was huge," Libertyville coach Kathie Swanson said of her senior guard. "She's a good outside shooter. She had an outstanding senior year. She stepped up and showed a lot of leadership. I'm glad she got to go out with a regional championship."
Jennings came off the bench to hit back-to-back shots and eventually help the Wildcats erase an 8-0 deficit.
"We knew she could shoot," Hersey coach Mary Fendley said. "Maybe I underestimated how good of screens they set for her. She kept them in the game."
Rogowski, who recently became Hersey's all-time leading scorer in just her junior year, led all scorers with 22 points, but the Huskies got contributions from all of their starters. Swan added 18 points and 8 rebounds.
Kathryn Korff posted 8 points and 11 rebounds. She went 6 of 6 from the foul line in the fourth and was instrumental in helping the Huskies break the Wildcats' pressure.
"She had some beautiful passes," Fendley said of the 6-foot senior.
Perkins, meanwhile, scored 4 of her 7 points in the fourth and dished out 8 assists. The 5-5 senior also grabbed 8 rebounds.
"She just hustles like crazy," Fendley said. "She's just all heart."
Hersey played a near-flawless fourth quarter, hitting 8 of 9 shots from the floor, 8 of 9 free throws, and committing no turnovers.
The Huskies haven't lost a game when they've scored at least 50 points.
"I said before the game that 50 is the magic number," Fendley said.
Libertyville's fourth quarter saw the Wildcats shoot 2 of 18.
"Our shots weren't falling and we had some breakdowns with our interior defense," Swanson said. "You combine the two and it was kind of a snowball effect. We played three outstanding quarters, but the fourth really hurt us."
