Who says $1 million isn't a lot of money?
When Michael Steele, Republican National Committee chairman, had the audacity to say that after taxes and such "a million dollars is not a lot of money," I was outraged.
It may not be "a lot of money" if you are in his tax bracket, but for the vast majority of us it's more than we'll make in decades...if we're lucky enough to be working at all. But Steele and his ilk are more out of touch with what is happening to our country than I ever thought possible. They seem to measure "normal" by the income they receive, rather than the income of Main Street Americans, the ones who have lost their jobs, are at risk of losing their jobs, or have had to resort to working in jobs substantially at lower pay rates because they can't find work they are qualified to do.
We used to hear a lot about the 'trickle down' economy. The reality is that government has given more and more financial incentives to big business and the wealthiest among us in the hope that those folks would use that extra money to create jobs that put more people to work. Well, the reality is they've used that money to line their own pockets instead. And as to his comments about socialism? I believe we already have the socialism of the rich; it's alive and well, paid for by the toil of Main Street Americans.
