Fremd wraps up perfect run in West
Undefeated in conference. Once beaten overall. And Fremd is still hungry for more.
The Vikings take their 23-1 record, 10-0 in the Mid-Suburban West, into next Wednesday's MSL title game against Prospect. But despite their stellar record after Friday night's 64-49 homecourt win over Hoffman Estates, they are not satisfied.
Even after out-rebounding the Hawks (12-12, 2-8) 25-16, they feel they can do better. Even after limiting the Hawks to 18-of-41 shooting, they want to do more to shut down opponents' offenses. Even after forcing 16 turnovers and committing just 11, not satisfied there either.
Chris Klimek will lead the drive to improve, especially after putting in a career-high 36 points Friday night for the Vikes, including 12 straight shots from the first quarter into the fourth. Short-range jumpers, putbacks, twisting layins, constant motion to get open, he did it all.
"Zach (point guard Monaghan) made some great passes. Everyone made some," he noted. And as to the rebounding, "That was a big focus," especially after Hoffman's rebounding kept them in the game the in their first meeting. Klimek and Charlie Rosenberg pretty much took care of that worry.
As to his own shooting?
"Everything was kind of falling my way," he said.
And Fremd's. The Vikes broke away from a 32-26 edge at the half as Klimek hit 5 straight shots in the third while Hoffman only took 7 and made 4. "He created matchup problems for them," said Fremd coach Bob Widlowski.
"We just couldn't contain Chris Klimek," said Hoffman coach Bill Wandro, whose own club got excellent shooting from Kevin Tiongson (15 points), John Bialek, Lance Vesper and Colin Conway early.
