Cops: Ex-girlfriend witnessed Elgin murder

Police say an Elgin woman saw her ex-boyfriend "pull out a gun and shoot" a 29-year-old man who was killed Feb. 4 in front of his home on the city's west side.

The witness, Alexis I. Cruz, 18, then saw the shooter flee in a minivan being driven by someone else, according to Kane County court documents made public Thursday.

The shooting happened after murder suspect Amilkar Antonio "Tony" Caro, 32, was driven to the home of victim Hugo Navarro and confronted him, police said in an affidavit for a search warrant. Witnesses said they heard a "heated argument" followed by four gunshots, the filing states.

Caro, of the 1300 block of Dakota Street, Elgin, is wanted for first-degree murder and considered armed and dangerous, police said. The suspected getaway driver, Rogelio Leon-Rodriguez, 18, of the 500 block of Standish Street, Elgin, was captured over the weekend and charged with murder.

Cruz was charged in the case with obstructing justice, after she was pulled over by police moments after the fatal shooting and denied being in the area and having any involvement, authorities have said.

Court documents say she had been following Caro in a white Chevrolet Impala as he was driven to the scene of the shooting in a green Chevrolet Venture that he and Cruz owned together.

Police have indicated the killing may have been fueled by a "relationship" that involved Caro and Cruz, who lived together, and the victim.

As of Thursday, Cruz had been bailed out of the Kane County jail, while Leon-Rodriguez was still in custody on $2 million bond. They are due back in court March 8 and Feb. 27, respectively.
