Palatine police continue to investigate fatal crash
Palatine police continue to investigate a two-car crash over the weekend that claimed the life of an 89-year-old Chicago man.
Police Cmdr. Kurt Schroeder said no one has been charged or cited in the incident, which killed Nicola Masellis, of the 4800 block of West Waveland Avenue in Chicago.
Around 8 p.m. Sunday, police said, Masellis was a passenger in a 1997 Lexus driven by 80-year-old Angela Masellis, of the same address. They were traveling southbound on Martin Drive and turned onto Northwest Highway, into the path of a 1994 Pontiac Bonneville.
A 47-year-old Palatine man driving the Pontiac swerved in an attempt to avoid the car, but his passenger side struck the front of the Lexus, Schroeder said.
Nicola Masellis was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was pronounced dead around 2:30 a.m. Monday, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.
Angela Masellis and a third occupant of the Lexus, a 59-year-old female, were treated for injuries at the scene. The Pontiac driver was taken to Northwest Community Hospital. His condition is unknown.
Schroeder said the department's accident reconstruction unit is investigating the crash.
