Bond set at $75,000 in sexual assault case
A Cook County judge set bail at $75,000 Monday for a 19-year-old Wheeling man charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint of an 18-year-old woman.
Jesus Zavala-Mora, of the 400 block of Pheasant Run Drive, is accused of tricking the woman into going to a relative's apartment where Zavala-Mora "was lying in wait for her," said Assistant State's Attorney Jerome Allen.
Zavala-Mora then took the woman to his apartment and into his bedroom where he ordered her to disrobe, Allen said. When she refused, the defendant allegedly bound her hands and feet with a bandanna and a belt and sexually assaulted her "as she attempted to thwart his efforts," Allen said.
The defendant is accused of preventing the woman from leaving, Allen said, and an argument ensued during which Zavala-Mora struck the woman several times. Fearing a more severe beating, she remained until morning when she convinced Zavala-Mora to take her to school, said Allen, who did not know if that referred to high school or college.
The woman reported the incident to a school counselor who notified Wheeling police, Allen said.
Zavala-Mora has no criminal background, Allen said. If convicted he could face six to 30 years in prison.
He next appears in a Rolling Meadows courtroom on March 4.
