Gunshot to head killed Algonquin dad

An autopsy Friday determined that an Algonquin man whose teenage son has been charged with his murder was shot in the head by a "long" gun, police said.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Urban said the suspected murder weapon was recovered at the scene, but authorities are still trying to identify the owner. He said several Firearm Owner Identification cards had been registered at the home of the victim, 51-year-old Brian D. Szalonek.

"The weapon we got is probably the one the crime was committed with," Urban said, declining to elaborate on whether it was a rifle or shotgun.

Szalonek's 16-year-old son, David, has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting about 7:45 p.m. Monday. Police say the teen, who may have a form autism, shot Szalonek in his bed after an argument and sometime after the father awoke.

The victim's body was discovered when police responded to a report of a suspicious activity at Szalonek's home on the 1400 block of Westbourne Parkway, where he lived with his wife and two children. Multiple weapons were recovered there, according to police.

Urban said the Kane County Coroner's Office performed an autopsy Friday. Police released the results after calls to the coroner's office, closed to the public for Lincoln's Birthday, went unanswered.

David Szalonek, whose next court date is Feb. 18, was being held at Kane County's Juvenile Justice Center on $250,000 bond. He currently is being represented by the public defender's office, according to court records.
