Sugar Grove church seeks help to feed Haitians

A Sugar Grove church is inviting everyone to help it feed 50,000 hungry people in Haiti.

Village Bible Church is packing food Feb. 20 for Kids Against Hunger, an aid organization.

"If there is a time to respond, this is what the church needs to be about," said Keith Duff, one of the church's pastors.

More than 170 people have signed up so far to fill plastic bags with a dry rice-and-soy mix fortified with 21 vitamins and minerals, six dehydrated vegetables and chicken flavoring. When cooked with boiling water, it makes a kind of porridge.

The meals are part of a shipment of 500,000 going to two orphanages, which are now feeding community members as well as orphans.

"We're a small part in a bigger process," Duff said.

You don't have to belong to the church to help. "It's open to whoever has a heart to help," Duff said. Just RSVP to keith.duff@villagebible.org.

The church is also seeking money to pay for the meals, which cost 25 cents apiece. To donate, send a check to Village Bible, marked "Haiti Relief," 847 N. Route 47, Sugar Grove, IL, 60554. People can also donate online at villagebible.org.
