Olympic theme at Carmel High School Street Scenes

The Olympians are in Vancouver, but there will be plenty of Olympic spirit right here in Mundelein as Carmel Catholic High School puts on the "Street Scenes Hosts the Olympics," fundraiser.

Organizers say there will be at least 20 live bands, plenty of food from local restaurants and the annual student show in the auditorium. The show is professionally produced and choreographed, performed four times per night.

"We are proud to say Street Scenes has been a Lake County tradition for the past 36 years," said Carmel President Judith Mucheck. "Hundreds of generous volunteers donate their time to a cause that has been a true community builder from Wisconsin to Indiana. This year is no exception, and we're thrilled to continue the tradition."

Street Scenes is Carmel's largest fundraiser. More than 1,000 adult and student volunteers make the event happen. In 2009, Street Scenes' profit was $347,900. Attendance totaled 6,825, said publicity director Marie Grimaldi. Last year Street Scenes welcomed it's 200,000th visitor since its inception in 1975. In that time, more than $7 million has been raised. The money is used for the school's core educational programs.

The school's gym is transformed into a Las Vegas-style casino, with blackjack, poker, craps and roulette. The casino opens at 8 p.m.

Parents and friends of Carmel support Street Scenes as entertainers, artists, bartenders, stage crews, electricians, short-order cooks, ticket sellers, printers, seamstresses, waiters and waitresses, setup and take down crews, among other tasks, Grimaldi said.
