Don't blame voters, blame the media

Don't blame the voters for the election of Scott Lee Cohen as the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor. The Daily Herald's editorial says he was nominated "in part, because few people voted Tuesday."

I see no reason to believe that a heavier turnout would have produced a different result. After looking at recent newspapers and the candidates' Web sites, I had no clue that something like this was on his record.

It is unreasonable to expect the average voter to do more than this. While I in fact chose to vote for Art Turner, Cohen appeared to be an attractive candidate.

It is the news media that is primarily to blame here.

They should have presented this information in a timely manner - meaning near enough to the primary date that voters would be aware of it. To a lesser extent, Democratic Party officials should have researched the candidates and publicized this sort of information.
